At first, I typed in "Women's rights" but I couldn't find anything. And then I tried "Women". The Gender Empowerment is one of the results from WorldMapper.org.
This picture shows women's empowerment. They measured several indicators of opportunities for women. It takes into account the female share of parliamentary representation; proportions of legislators, senior officials, managers, professional and technical employees who are women. The European countries have the highest score. An interesting part is Asia. West, east ,north and south Asia have very different results. In North Asia, Japan ranks second in the world alongside South Africa. West Asia, however are in the lower ranks with as some Africa's other countries. Many of Asia's north and southeast countries have presidents who are women. For example, Corazon Aquino (President of the Philippines), Tsai Ing-wen (President of Taiwan) or Halimah Yacob (President of Singapore) etc. Even though the US is in a similar rank with Europe, they haven't had a female president yet. |
From this map we see that women's right to vote in the USA came very late in comparison to the rest of the world. For much of our history, politics have often been a man's world with little involvement from women. To be honest, America's place in these rankings is not a surprise to me. I think this country is very slow to change their traditions. |
