1. Tonight, Tonight - Zelph on a Shelf
It was hard to find songs specifically about Feminism in Mormon Culture, but this song brings out a lot of things that women really do hear in the church. They point out things like the lower position of women who need to listen to their husbands ("Your value comes from being someone's wife.") and the stress on modesty for women to help keep men's thoughts pure. Even though many facts show us that church is a community that is lead by men, but I didn't know that in the LDS church it was this serious. |
2. If I Were A Boy - Beyoncé
This song has always stood out to me as a song that points out the difference between women and men in our society. Men can do all kinds of things, even bad things like cheat and drink but society doesn't care. It is very different for women. The only reason Beyoncé is able to understand women and be a better man, is because she is a woman. |

3. Men Explain Things to Me - Tacocat
Men tend to think that women don't understand cars, engineering, sports, business etc. They have to explain things to women even when the women might know more about the subject than they do. This song also brings up the line "Don't tell me to calm down". This is something women often hear when they get passionate about a topic. People just say, "It must be her time of the month." |
4. Love Myself - Hailee Steinfeld
Women have a lot of ability, many times even more than men. But society treats women like they need a man. In the words of Hailee Steinfeld herself, "I think for me the song just has a really strong self-empowerment message, and whether you take that as something physical or not, it basically means the same thing. It's about being able to provide for yourself and knowing how much power there is in that." |

5. You Don't Own Me - Lesley Gore
This song from 1964 is her telling the men who want to date her that she is not there for them to show off to their friends and order around about what to do or say. All she wants is to be herself. In our society even today, women are expected to do as the men say. But why can't women make their own decisions and not worry about what every one will think? |
6. When I was a Boy - Dar Williams
This song points out the gender roles in our society. When she was little (before she grew breasts) she was able to do all the things the boys did: climb trees, run around with out a shirt on, and stay out at night. But then she grew up and had to be walked home by a boy because it wasn't safe. The culture told her that she needed to care more about her appearance; have tighter clothes, bigger boobs. But she remembers being a "boy" and she didn't have to worry about those things. |
